MetaphorIn just 8 days, I had learned so much about the Internet. From search engines, meta engines, subject directories to evaluation of the website. Initially, I thought I would not be able to manage my time well or even submit the work on time. It was an enjoyable experience. My first time collaborating information on Wiki, using Blogger in a professional way and remembering to cite the page. Recalling on the first day of lesson, the teacher taught us the term 'Metaphor' whereby you use certain things to describe yourself in a positive way. I used the watermelon to describe myself as it is red colour inside and red means to be very cheerful colour to me. Also, the shape of the watermelon when it is being cut resembles a smile. This best decribes me because I like to smile. Now, after the 8 days, I going to use the rainbow to describe EIR and my experiences. Red represents the enjoyable moments I had in EIR Orange represents the challenges I faced (because orange tastes sour and that is how i felt when I face the challenges) Yellow represents the liveliness in class, be it the noise made or the laugther everyone and myself had. Green and Blue represents the peacefulness when everyone is concentrating on their work Indigo and Violet represents the different learning point everyday Finally when you combine them all together, the rainbow represents the wonderful memory and experience I had. The rainbow is made of the different colours, it may be good or bad but overall, the rainbow turns out to be sometime very nice.
Reflection on Wiki Experience
The significant learning experience for me is that I was able to communicate with other people. I feel happy that I can contribute some resources and put them in the Wiki for everyone else to see. I was able to share my knowledge with people on Wiki and I believe that sharing is the best gift. As an individual contributor, I gained the experience of using Wiki. Never did I have contributed to other sites before. I am always the one getting information from other online users. Now I have experienced the joy of sharing with other people. I will be really delighted my contributions have helped the other people. I always ensure my information is relevant to the topic that I am doing. If there were any comments given, I would gladly accept it. Wiki is a place where people share their researched information based on the common topic. The most challenging experience I had was my part on contributing. It is because other people had 'taken' the lead to start on the topic and so much information are already up there. Initially I was very afraid that I could not contribute much but however I managed to overcome it by researching more and find out what other resources I could add into the wiki page. It was tough at first but then it turned out well in the end. The quote would best describe this is "No Pain No Gain". An advice I would give is to always to do lots of research. Even though the page already has a lot of information, try your best to contribute. There is always a possibility that some information may be left out and that is when you will get to do your part. Elaborate on the points as much as you can and when you are able to do that, that means you have done enough research. I would use Wiki for research in my own Diploma because Wiki is a place whereby so many people are contributing together and lots of information can be found. Wiki can help us to expand our knowledge and it would definitely be useful for my research in the future. No one on Earth knows everything about everything. Therefore, I guess Wiki is created because of this reason. Wiki is a community of 'flowing' knowledge, people from anywhere contributes what they know and the collaboration just gets bigger and bigger. By sharing, everyone is able to learn more from one another rather than just from our own contextual knowledge. Last but not least Wiki is freely accessible and this is an important factor for every researcher. If information is not free, the researchers would be having a difficult time and this might turn out to be a big problem for them.

I personally had not try Twitter and I will probably not try to use it. This is because there is a word limit of 140 words in Twitter and people tend to update about their lives every minute instead of sharing useful information. I think that Twitter should be a place where everyone should share their knowledge and this would definitely make a better learning place for everyone. Nevertheless, Twitter is good in a way that it is convenient for people. Immediate updates can be send via SMS. I had encountered some Tweeters whereby they share information, for example health related issues. I like this and it had enhanced my learning of EIR. I find that Blogspot has enhanced more learning of EIR because on blogspot , the information are facts and is always accessible. There are no restrictions unless the user indicates so. Blogspot is like an online diary for people where they share their life experiences with the public. It helps me in a way that I get facts about certain things and most likely the sources posted on their blog would be reliable. If they did not experience it themselves, the bloggers would not know how and what to write on. Because of the word limit in Twitter, users cannot post very long updates for the day itself. In return, some would post up links to websites that might be of a relevant source. However, I must be careful on who to follow because some users might just update their daily lives every minute. My dream holiday would be Hokkaido, Japan!I visited Chan Brothers for more information about Hokkaido. ![]() Mt. Hakodate- graded as the world's three most spectacular view. ![]() Lake Toya ![]() Otaru Music Box Museum ![]() Lake Akan Evaluation Citerias I used: Authority Chan Brothers is a very reliable travel agency. In the past, I had seen them sponsering various television shows and I think without them providing, the television programme would not have been a success. There are contacts and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) so as to facilitate the needs of people. Accessibility There are loads of images uploaded. This allow people to see the spectacular scenery of other countries. There are no restrictions and everything accessable is free. Presentation & Arrangement The website uses bright colors and easy to use tabs for quick access to different parts of the website. To tell you the truth, I had never been overseas before. I have been wanting to visit Japan ever since I was young. Singapore is so small and I am very bored of this country. Whereas, Japan has so many breathtaking sceneries as I had seen from television. By just imagining, I could feel how is it like to be in Japan. Another reason because I like to watch various dramas and animation from Japan and that has led me to have an intrest towards Japan. "Stomp" is an example of "Citizen Journalism". It complies different articles and anyone is free to post anything. The advantage is that other readers can get more happening information about Singapore. Since anyone is free to post anything, the accuracy and reliability of the source is lowered. We may not know if the article is real or not, or even people may just post irrelevant stuffs. The citerias I used to evaluate Stomp.com : Purpose Stomp.com is an entertainment website. It contains articles about local celebrities and the lastest happening things in Singapore. Currency The articles are up-to-date. For exmaple, the "lastest" news of Jack Neo's scandal is available on Stomp. Accuarcy The articles in Stomp.com maybe not be reliable because registered users can post anything. Hence, there are many sources that are unncessary. For example, there are articles about a cat sleeping under a car and the author find the cat silly. In the end, he got "scolded" by the people and received many negative comments. Accessibility There are lots of images avaiable on every article. There are no restrictions to anyone, everyone can access this page. Registration is unnecessary. However if you want to post a comment or contribute an article, registration is required. Presentation & Arrangement The home page is nicely designed and it looks attractive. Bright colors are being used and thus enhances the whole website's design. RSS feed is provided to allow users to get immediate updates. Stomp.com has also a 'FaceBook' page, 'Twitter' as well as a 'YouTube' channel. From this activity, I had learned how evaluate websites. I always go to a website and never know what type of website it is or whether the information are reliable or not. Wednesday, March 24, 2010
Later on, I participated in the discussion forum. I feel that by posting my views on the topic, people can know how I feel and maybe some of them might agree with me. I am always willing to accept any comments from other people. This way I can learn to view the topic from different angles and not just from my perspective. Online discussion is an easier way for me to communicate with the others as I am not the type of person who can talk about my opinions all day long. Traditional face-to-face in class discussion may result people getting bored easily maybe because there are only a few who contributes while the rest will just keep quiet and listen. It was a rather meaningful online activity, because I learned how people felt about the topic and I agree with some of their say. In my opinion, no one is right or wrong in the discussion forum, each and everyone of us have our own opinion and we are free to voice them out.
Invisible web(databases) more effective. It is effective because each result they give has a long paragrah of information which is sufficient for my project. It also provides the bibliography and I can email the citation to my own mail account. This is very convinient.
Some times when we use search engines, we might not be able to get sufficient information and have to spend time looking through many pages before I can obtain what I want. I will use invisble web for my research in my own respective Diploma because I cannot always rely on one particular search engine. I have to expand my ways of doing research and get all sorts resources and finally summarize them together. "Wiki-ing" was not easy because most of the information were already up and I am afraid I cannot contribute much. Nevertheless, I will try my best and do up lots of research and share what I know with everyone! |
